VISIT AN EARLY JURASSIC STOMPING GROUND

Hike to the Moccasin Mountain Track Site

Date: Wednesday, May 16, 2018

Time: 9:00 AM – 11:30 AM

Location: Gather at the Earthfest Information Table, Kane County Office of Tourism, 78 South 100 East, Kanab, Utah at 8:30 AM. Carpool or caravan to the trailhead.

Directions: Travel north from Kanab on US Hwy. 89 and turn left onto Hancock Rd. going west towards Coral Pink Sand Dunes State Park. At the intersection with Yellowjacket Rd, turn left and go 6.9 miles to a turnoff at a dirt road leading to the site. Do not attempt this route without a high-clearance 4WD vehicle!

Description: Join Paleontologist Katja Knoll for an easy 1.5-mile hike along a sandy road leading to the Moccasin Mountain Tracksite (approx. 3 miles out and back). This rare site features a high diversity of fossil vertebrate tracks from the Early Jurassic time period in North America. Bring water, snacks and sun protection.
